WSO – We Shall Overcome is a user and interest organization for human rights, self-determination and dignity in mental health.
WSO was founded in 1968, and is Norways oldest user-organization in mental health.
More than 5,000 people are subjected to coercion in mental health care every year. Many receive treatment, medication and electroshock that they experience as degrading and harmful, and as a violation of their human rights.
WSO works to ensure that people with psychosocial disabilities have rights and legal protection on an equal footing with others, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – CRPD.
The Mental Health Care Act must be replaced with non-discriminatory legislation, and forced treatment must be prohibited.
We are working for a shift in understanding from a medical model to a psychosocial model.
Mental health services based on human rights must be developed, ensuring self-determination and freedom of choice regarding one’s own treatment. Drug-free services must be available throughout the country for those who want them.
